Hymnal Data

I created a dictionary of hymnal data

My wife wanted a CSV file that showed the hymnal data by title, key signature, topic, tune, etc. This isn’t something that is super easy to compile and there isn’t really any ready-made reference for the hymnal that I found. Especially if you want the key signatures. Go ahead, try it.

The best that I found came from here: http://www.ldsorganists.info/key.htm. I went ahead and copied all the data from them and wifey bought the $25 pdf with lots of arrangements and other cool stuff.

I then created a PowerShell script to download data from https://music.churchofjesuschrist.org and parse the “secondary-data” class. Its pretty darn clean and I love being able to use skills that I’ve developed at work to be able to help my wonderful wife out :)

The result is this CSV file that has all 342 english hymns. It doesn’t have easy sorting by scripture or meter, but I could add those in at a later date if I wanted to.

And you can have it too.

Next step is to load in the last 4 years of sacrament meetings into it to view frequency per song over time. Maybe I should ask other people to pull that same data by year and send it to me along with their country + state. I could compile some sweet statistics about the regionality of certain hymns in the church.

Update: Thanks to u/thru_dangers_untold, I now have expression notation!
